Opening Night Approaches!
CCN would like to remind our readers out there that the After School Program’s art project is reaching its culmination! Join us and our kids Thursday, May 9th from 5:30-8:00 pm at Platte Forum (1616 Little Raven) where you can gaze upon the weeks of hard work up close, as well as talk to the young artists themselves. Aided by professional artists, our kids worked in tandem with each other this year to create wildlife scenery that sustains the diverse, imaginative animals our older students created. Each animal in the exhibit represents one of our after-school kids, as they imprinted their characteristics and preferences onto canvas, which eventually became their own unique animal creations. We are very excited about this year’s collaboration and invite everyone to come meet, greet, and observe the CCN kids’ exhibit at the Platte Forum Community Arts Center 1610 Little Raven Street, Suite 135, Denver, Colorado 80202 next Thursday!
Summer at Last
In less than a month, Aurora public schools officially close until September, which means CCN’s annual Summer Program is just around the corner! On Tuesday, May 28th, we will be kicking off the first of three summer sessions all leading up to the hotly anticipated camping trip in August. As many of you are familiar, these 2-week sessions meet daily from 9:30-3:30 pm and will center on one academic theme (Art, Science, History/Geography, etc.). As always, there will be a week hiatus between the sessions so we can regroup and organize the subsequent sessions; as always, if you have any questions involving volunteering, scheduling, or availability, please contact Nathan Hickman at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. for more information.
And as the Summer Program begins, we will also be commencing the Summer Food Program, a Hunger-Free Colorado project. As you may remember from 2012, the Summer Food Program is designed to provide local kids with free, nutritious lunches at various sites all summer long. Last year, CCN fed 140 kids healthy lunches and our goal this year is 1,000! A total of 7 Aurora-area sites have already been locked in as we head into May, but we are still in need of volunteers! Held Monday – Friday from 9-1 pm (June – August), we are currently looking for volunteers to help us coordinate these daily events, as well as food donations to help supply the demand. You can contact Mary at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. , or call our office at 303-360-9175 for more information and volunteering/donation opportunities; together, we can keep Colorado kids healthy and happy this summer!
Thanks!
The Colfax Community Network would like to begin this month’s section of appreciation by personally thanking Maria Kozak, an artist who was vital to our kids’ completion of their exhibit at Platte Forum. Twice a week, Maria lent her time to assist and stimulate our kids, encouraging them to push the limits of their imaginations while creating animal avatars accurate of their character and personality; the Platte Forum exhibit was made possible with your help, thanks again!
On Friday, April 19th, Goodwill Industries made a very generous contribution to our After-School Program by treating our kids to a bowling field trip! Hosted at a discounted rate by AMF Lanes of Aurora, our studious after-school kids were able to get their weekend started a little earlier by hitting the lanes thanks to the collaborative efforts of these two local businesses.
Arlen Preblud, of We Don’t Waste, has pledged their support for our Summer Food Program, with a goal to increase their fresh produce supplication so that in addition to the healthy lunches children can take healthy food home to their families.
Finally, the continued commitment from St. Barnabas (Family Nights), Birthday Smiles (year-round support for after-school program birthdays), and High Point Church has been a blessing to us as we finally close out the school year To all those involved, thank you again for helping us execute our mission and serve the Colfax community.
