April 2012
Happy Hunting!!! Wow!
Colfax Community Network was happy to host 1200 children and their parents on Saturday for an Easter Event like no other. Kids twelve and under hunted for candy and eggs and received Easter Prizes this past weekend at Del Mar Park in Aurora. A big thank you to everyone who donated, contributed and volunteered… we couldn’t have done it without you. Special thank you’s to Jesse Ogas of ARC Thrift Stores, Pastor Paul Howard of Montclair United Methodist Church, Christina Clark of St Barnabas Episcopal Church, St Paul United Methodist Church, the AmeriCorps volunteers from MCPN and all the helping hands who put together baskets and helped on event day! See pictures from the event here.
Family Night: New Record!
We at CCN are pleased to announce record attendance at March’s Family Night! Our intensified outreach efforts must have worked since we had an indoor record of 91 people (including 41 children) on Thursday night, March 22nd. Prairie Unitarian Universalist kindly provided homemade pizzas for our guests as they continued the new tradition of sharing information, experiences, and aspirations to fellow Colfax families. Following their meal, the kids spent much of their time with fun activities such as Air Hockey, bracelet-making, and Legos. All in all, the dinner was a rousing success and we are excited for the turnouts to come in subsequent Family Nights; thanks again to all who came and shared!
Artistic Platte Forum
As many of you know by now, our Colfax kids are pretty well traveled when it comes to Colorado. Over the past two weeks, they have resumed their venturing ways by engaging in an art exercise courtesy of Platte Forum in downtown Denver. Every Tuesday and Wednesday until May 2nd our kids will travel to the downtown art gallery to participate in a project based around everyday items and objects we disregard in daily life. This “found art” assignment challenges the children to create animals that could sustain life in an urban setting, using only items foraged from the city of Denver itself. This unique and creative task has captivated our kids and let their imaginations soar! What’s more, the children’s work will be put on display in Platte Forum’s gallery in an installed exhibit at the end of May. Please show your support by visiting the gallery at the end of next month and seeing what kinds of creatures the kids come up with!
Guess the Weight and Win a 2012 Black Ford Mustang!!!
Are you a genius, or just really lucky? Well it really doesn’t matter, because in Concerts For Kids’ A Million For What Matters contest, all you have to do is correctly guess the weight of the six adult band members of Air Dubai and their instruments. The prize for guessing the correct weight? A 2012 Black Ford Mustang generously donated by Sill-TerHar Motors! Each $10 ticket you purchase allows you to enter a guess, down to the hundredth of a pound (ex. 1,013.45 lbs.), and gets you one step closer to the sweet prize! So buy up all the guesses you can now because the contest ends April 30th. The winner of this game of skill will be announced May 26th, 2012 during the Concerts for Kids’ Denver Day of Rock. For more information about the contest rules or how to buy tickets, please call us at the office at 303.360.9175 or visit http://contestrules.concertsforkids.org/tp40/page.asp?id=282680.
CCN Running Wild!
The Colfax Community Network is gearing up for next month’s marathon, and are now in the middle of sponsoring our 19 kids to run in Saturday, May 19th‘s Bellco Colfax 5K. Thanks to dozens of donations, we have finished registering our first relay team and are now busy collecting money for the rest of the entry fees of own CCN kids. Conditioning for the race is in progress too; CCN staffers have been taking the kids to nearby Spencer-Garrett Park for conditioning training weekly. Don’t forget, fees for kids 12 and under are just $20 dollars. You can sponsor a CCN kid at our website or by sending us a check directly (PO Box 202377, Denver, CO, 80220). You can also register yourself at the Colfax Marathon website, https://cui.active.com/event-reg/select-race?e=1621704&mailingId=&recipientId . THX!
In customary fashion, CCN would like to send our thanks to the many people who have helped us achieve our mission. This month, we were privileged enough to have Girl Scout Troupe #3138 pick us as their Hometown Heroes, and graciously donated 116 assorted Girl Scout Cookies boxes to our Food Shelter. We appreciate the continued efforts of Birthday Smiles and Smoky Hill’s Homework Helpers, who continue to bring anticipated fun-filled visits that all the kids enjoy. And as always, the indomitable support of the Tamarac Optimists Club, St. Pius X, and St. Barnabas has been a godsend.
